Rainie's Story

"Alison's support pre, during and post the birth of my daughter was absolutely invaluable. I couldn't recommend her highly enough!

Elizabeth is my first baby and as a single mum, whose own mum lived about 4 hours away, I was a bit nervous about the birth. I had already decided that I wanted my mum to be my birth partner, but we both agreed that it would help us to also have a doula's presence. Alison did this in spades and Baby Elizabeth laughing made what could have been a frightening and difficult experience (I had to have an emergency c-section after a long labour) both calm and undaunted.

In addition to several ante-natal visits to discuss my birth plan, feelings about the birth and preparation, Alison also accompanied me to an anomaly scan when a routine scan appeared to show problems (all was well, fortunately). Alison's warm support in coming with me when my mum couldn't was very much appreciated and it reassured both me and my mum that someone who cared was there with me.

As part of the ante-natal visits, Alison helped me plan for the birth suggesting ways of relaxing etc. She provided all her contact numbers so I could get in touch with her day or night leading up to my due date and she talked me through my pain relief options in a knowledgeable, supportive but non directive way. I was reassured to know that whatever I might decide on the day, Alison would support me.

Alison also spoke to my mum at regular intervals, (at our request) to discuss how they would work as a team and this was very reassuring to my mum and me too.

Because of signs of possible of pre-eclampsia, I had to be induced. Whilst this wasn't the birth that I had wished for (I wanted a water birth), Alison made sure that as far as was possible my birth plan wishes were met. She stayed with me throughout my long labour (26 hours in the end), supporting me and my mum and working sensitively with the midwives and doctors to ensure I was kept informed and they were aware of my wishes. She was a calm, supportive and loving presence throughout and provided reassurance to my mum when needed. Alison worked with her to ensure that I was as comfortable as possible throughout.

Due to complications I ended up having to have an emergency c-section and unusually this had to be under general anesthetic. Knowing of my wishes and of the importance of skin to skin contact and early feeding, despite no doubt being exhausted from supporting me throughout the previous day and night, Alison stayed with me and my mum and made sure that my baby was put to the breast immediately after delivery. I was of course only aware of this after coming to from the anesthetic some time later, but I will always be especially grateful for this important kindness on Alison’s behalf which I am sure has added to the bond that my baby feels towards me and to our ongoing success with breast feeding (now nearly 5 months on).

Alison came to visit me and my baby at home shortly after the birth and provided reassurance on how we were getting on, plus additional advice on breastfeeding in person and over the phone. I (and my mum) are absolutely indebted to Alison for all she did in helping us welcome my beautiful daughter into the world.
